Cod is commercially interesting in our region, but particularly because of overfishing, it has a very low potential. New knowledge has been developed which shows that the cod is divided into a number of local populations, but in order to update the management plan requires a transnational response to conduct a thorough inventory of stocks, geographic distributions and genetic differences.

The project CodS has two main aims: To develop plans for ecosystembased and sustainable management of coastal stocks of cod in Skagerrak/Kattegat, and to develop necessary scientific knowledge needed for a first pilot restoration of a locally extinct stock of cod. The work is highly multi-disciplinary and includes aspects of law, policies and institutional rules, socioeconomy, genetics, ecology, physiology and behavioural ecology. The work is divided into 10 workpackages plus one workpackage responsible for coordination.

Integrating social science research from one university in the region with scientific research from other universities and research institutions are new to the marine research within the project area and contribute significantly to the additional financial impact that strengthens the region.
