In nature, coastal lines evolve over billions of years. The past 150 years however, the industrialization and urbanization in the Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak Region has put pressure on the development of the coastal lines in the region. Thus, the project “Future Coasts” wanted to come up with a plan for how to both take the development into consideration and create growth.
Coastal communities undergoing change
For thousands of years, the ocean has created a community between the Scandinavian Countries as well as it has been a source of life for the population. The last 150 years however, the coastal areas have changed due to urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. People are moving to the cities and thus the coastal lines are not maintained everywhere. Also, more tourists put a pressure on the environment along the coastal lines.
However, these trends can be turned into something positive and bring growth to the Region. Thus, the project Future Coasts worked on finding a way to meet the challenges and turn them into a sustainable and growth.
Sustainable development of coastal lines
The project wanted to gather knowledge about sustaible coastal development and to use this knowledge to create strategies for the future on how to accommodate the future challenges. The project consisted of minor projects which examined different coastal lines in the region. The idea was that the findings and experiences from one area could benefit other areas in the region.
These findings were turned into recommendations on how the coastal societies can meet the future challenges in a sustainable way. For example, the study showed that investing more in tourism can make tourists actually want to move to the coastal areas.
Network and cooperation continues
The project created a large network consisting of researchers, authorities, trade and industry. This network initiated studies of the different coastal areas and exchanged information. If taken into use, the recommendations in the project allows the coastal areas to evolve in a sustainable way – both economically and environmentally.
