There is a concern within the KASK region over the presence and dispersion of waterborne pathogenic viruses. Consequently there are a number of ongoing studies and research projects which will be coordinated under VISK. Further VISK developed knowledge and competence for societal action, whose actions lead to human well-being and quality of life. VISK provided a basis for both preventive (decreased likelihood) and reactive (reduced consequence) actions based on the latest risk assessment research. VISK has created a network of competence for sustainable and safe drinking water systems, where municipalities within the KASK region and beyond can seek advice for contingency and safety plans.
VISK included stakeholders from municipalities, industry organizations, academia and authorities to provide a complete and holistic approach. This is the first time for an inter-regional approach for pathogens in Scandinavia, which further provides another link for the area.
The project activities match competence, interests and geographical spread. The VISK work packages include; project leadership, epidemiology, mapping, virus reduction, risk communication, communication strategies, as well as dissemination and communication.
VISK results were collated in a communication and action plan which were disseminated to politicians, water industry stakeholders and society. The aim was to enable correct decision-making. An open home page was to be designed and maintained to promote the communication of VISK results through handbooks, newsletters and reports.
