Traffic jams on the Oresund Bridge and even longer delays on trains than today. This could very well be the future in the Oresund Region with a growing population and a wish for more integration between Denmark and Sweden. Thus, the Oresund Region’s infrastructure has to evolve. IBU-Øresund was the largest ever Interreg project in the Oresund Region, with more than 28 stakeholders working on developing infrastructure and urban planning.
Increasing population equals a need for change
With a growing population, future pressure on the railway system, Copenhagen Airport, and the Oresund Bridge is inevitable. At the same time, the cities must continue to evolve, as attractive areas where people will want to live are crucial for the future of the region. Thus, we must evolve the infrastructure and find new solutions to accommodate the region's future challenges.
The purpose of the project Oresund, Infrastructure and Urban Development was to create a knowledge database concerning the future challenges of the Oresund Region and how further integration across the Oresund will provide us with new possibilities in this matter.
Unique expert study
In the project, a unique expert study focusing on urban planning and infrastructure development in the Oresund Region was conducted. Thus, the future challenges of the region as well as the possible solutions to these challenges were studied.
The project received a lot of political attention and politicians in the Danish and Swedish parliament met; discussing traffic policies in Denmark and Sweden.
Advice for future development
With a growing population and a wish for future growth in the Oresund Region, focusing on infrastructure and urban planning is essential. With the recommendations from the project on how to solve the regional challenges, it is possible to continue developing the infrastructure in the region, making sure that we meet the challenges of the future.
